Top 10 reasons to visit Colombia this year

Cocora Valley, Colombia

Colombia is often underestimated as a travel destination. People think is beautiful, but don’t go there put off by some dreadful stories. These days Colombia is not so dangerous and if you travel with street-smart attitude, you will be fine. Use common sense, do your research and avoid risky places and you will immediately fall in love with this vibrant and diverse country of happy chatty people and humming birds.

As you walk the streets of little towns, hearing lively chatter of juice vendors on every corner, salsa rhythms in a distance, passing by old men playing cards on the street, donkeys pulling carts full of tempting fruits you realize quickly that the atmosphere is addictive.

People are helpful and chatty and this will give you a chance to experience Colombia on a different level. They will tell you stories and give your tips that you would never find in a guide-book.

5. Coffee tradition

Do you fancy a quick espresso right now? You get it! Coffee is being sold on streets everywhere. You don’t need to even look for it. For learning coffee-making process, have a tour in “Eje Cafetero” and have a chat with local framers.

6. Fruits

This is probably my favourite thing about Colombia. Whenever you look you have get doxycycline fresh fruit and juice sellers. Most of our meals there were based on fruit and juices. Lulo, papaya, guanábana or pithaya are only a few temptations you will meet at every corner. It would be a crime, if you didn’t try them.

7. You won’t stay still with the sound of music

Colombians love music and dancing, which is easily addictive. Once you soak into the hot rhythms, all your troubles will go away.

8. Beaches

Colombia has over 300 beaches for any kind of beach goers, from lazy tan addicts to adventure junkies. San Andres is probably one of the tops beach destination in South America. This small island is a blissful paradise for beach lovers. Walking on white soft sand probably feels like a slice of heaven. There’s more idyllic beaches in Colombia and whether you go to the Caribbean coast of prefer the Pacific side, you will find many picture-perfect places to satisfy everyone. From backpacking hotspots in Taganga through whale and dolphin watching spots to unspoiled coral reefs, Colombia has it all.

9. It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world

The landscapes in Colombia are breathtaking. You can find there anything you like: heavenly beaches, rain forest, waterfalls, mountains, desert, historical spots, lost city. The list goes on. Colombia is one of the top places in the world for diversity of plants, butterflies and birds. I have never seen more hummingbirds in one place before. They come so close to you that you can feel on your cheeks the wind they make with their little wings.

10. Language

In Colombia it is spoken probably the most beautiful form of Spanish. It is melodic, clear and poetic. Having some troubles with understanding the language I am still learning, Colombia made it is easy and painless for me. Colombians speak rather slowly and pronounce clearly, which makes Colombia a perfect place to practice your Spanish.

Colombia is a beautiful and vibrant country. Plan your trip this year and see it for yourself. There is only one risk you will have to face: you will want to go back!
