The guarded city of Arequipa: a quick guide

Arequipa, Peru

A quick guide to Arequipa- the White City

After many hours of traveling by bus from Chile, after long queue at the border with Peru we arrived at Tacna, the first place after crossing the border.

With a little stop, we took another bus that would take us straight to Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. We heard some gossip before about the charm and beauty of this city. Many Chileans go there for holidays and cannot keep their mouth shut from giving Arequipa many compliments. Following their stories and not being able to fight anymore with our curiosity, we decided to make a stop in Arequipa before climbing Machu Picchu. Now, we regret that we were rushing to see one of the Seven Wonders and did not dedicate more time to spend in this white Peruvian city.

The city itself is beautiful with colonial influence and precious white buildings. Even Peruvians say that this is the most beautiful city in Peru with the nicest main square. I must admit, that this can be true.

We spent the time wandering the narrow cobbled streets that reminded us of old neighbourhoods in Spanish towns. Of course, we couldn’t avoid eating too much of tasty peruvian dishes and in Arequipa there are a few great places where you can try them. There’s much more to do and see while in Arequipa than just the city, although pearl-like colonial buildings, rich history and cuisine will keep you busy there.

We haven’t had a chance to do it all. Colca Canyon, that can be done as a day trip, was being recommended literally by every person we had met on our way. This is the place where condors proudly fly in the high skies. Or you can climb one (or two) of the snow-capped volcanoes that guard the city – El Misti and Chacani. If you are not an outdoor person, the top attraction in Arequipa, Santa Catalina Monastery, will steal some of your time and attention and I am convinced that you won’t regret it.

Plaza de Armas in Arequipa is probably one of the most beautiful main squares in all South American cities. Apart from the architecture, trees, and flowers decorating the place, the tranquility and calmness struck our attention. This is a place where families and couples in love spend their evenings strolling around listening to the sounds of water in fountains.

I’d recommend joining some excursions from the city as there is so much to see. Some best tours are this one and this one.
