Jozani forest in Zanzibar –
what you need to know before your visit.
Jozani Forest is a conservation park on the east coast of Zanzibar and it seemed to me that it’s often skipped when visiting the island. I get it, the beautiful beaches and sunshine are too tempting to use your time visiting some forests, but if you get bored of working on your tan, put Jozani on your itinerary list.
What to expect visiting Jozani Forest
The main reason I went to visit the Jozani forest was to see red colobus monkeys that are endemic to Zanzibar. However, the park is quite extensive with mangroves and rich in different plants. Getting to the park is only allowed with a designated guide, who is going to give you a lot of interesting information about the trees and other plants in the forest (unfortunately you cannot choose your guide).

Top tips
- If you go to Jozani Forest only to see the monkeys, you might as well skip this tour altogether. Drive to the park and leave the car at the side of the road where the fruit vendors are. The monkeys jump around the trees at the side of the forest, so can be easily watched. We barely entered the forest to see the monkeys and the whole experience was around plants and mangroves.
Practical information
What to wear:
Since it’s most likely to be hot and humid there, wear loose clothes and shoes that cover your feet to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other creatures that live there. For those kind of activities (where water or mud is involved) I usually wear my Tropicfeel trainers that are comfortable and can be washed in the machine (I’ve had them for 4 years already and still in mint condition).
Flying to Zanzibar: Zanzibar is quite easy to reach from many destinations across Europe and the Middle East, with direct flights from Qatar or a short stopover in Doha. CheapOAir is my go-to site to search for flights as it compares the prices and timings of different airlines, which makes the whole hassle of researching much smoother. They also have now a brief description of what is needed for each destination in terms of covid tests etc.
