12 favourite shots from Atacama this year

Atacama is one of the biggest desert in the world. What words come first into your mind when you think of a desert? Sand? Empty? Hot? Dry? Atacama is many things, but for sure is not boring. I am presenting to you a list of my favourite shots from Atacama taken this year.

Favourite travel resources:

  • Booking.com for searching best prices on accommodation.
  • Discover Cars is a great website as they search both local and international car hire services, so you can choose the best deal for yourself. Make sure though, that the company has a good reputation and reviews.
  • Get Your Guide is my place to go for searching and booking tours and excursions, especially when I travel solo.
  • World Nomads travel insurance. I like them because they have quite extensive coverage of different activities.
  • Jack’s Flight Club is a service that can save you hundreds of dollars on flights, it works especially well in Europe.
  • Trivago where you can search and save on hotels.
  • Go City is a perfect site for booking bucket list experiences and attractions all in one to avoid paying for multiple tickets. Easy and saves money.
  • Trip Advisor– amazing for good quality recommendations.
  • Skyscanner is a perfect website for searching flight routes and comparing prices.

La Mano del Desierto

A sculpture by Mario Irarrázabal  rising from the desert in the middle of Atacama is a great place to visit during your travels around the region.

La Mano del Desierto, ChileVicuñas crossing the road

This photo I took during my trip to Miscanti and Minique lagoons. It reminded me of the Beatles famous shot.

Little heroe

A beautiful flower proudly growing through the dry soil of the desert. This is a photo of only one of thousands flowers decorating the lands. Desierto florido is a beautiful and rare phenomenon that happens some years in Atacama after rain.

Pan de Azucar

Pan de Azucar is one of many natural parks in Chile. What I love most about this one is that it is isolated a little bit and not that easy to reach. I could not stop smiling when we discovered this little wild beach hidden behind the rocks. This was one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen…and of course the photo does not do the justice. This place is so amazing that deserves a whole separate article, which will come soon.

Atacama

Geyseres del Tatio

Seriously, this is one of the places you cannot miss. These geysers at high altitude create an amazing spectacle that you will remember for long.

Pelicans in Antofagasta

There is so many pelicans on the coast in this part of the country. I love photographing them. Luckily, it is quite easy.

Thousands birds

Wild beaches far from civilization are homes for many birds. You see the ocean meeting the desert, birds …and nothing else.

Atacama

Traditional dancers

I was lucky enough to witness this street dance during a fiesta in one of the little towns on the north of the country. The music with a happy upbeat and colourful costumes are truly amazing.

Atacama

Can you see the end?

You drive and drive and drive…Maybe not as huge and limitless as Patagonia, but you get an idea of the greatness of Atacama.

Atacama

Golf club in the desert

I find it so funny! After living in Scotland for many years and seeing grassy golf courses everywhere, this one was an unusual surprise.

Atacama

Flag in the desert

In Chile you can find flags everywhere. This photo was taken near San Pedro de Atacama. A little lonely tree accompanied by a Chilean flag decorates the endless desert.

Atacama

Flamingos and lagoons

Go to Altiplano lagoons to have this view. This picturesque landscape and flamingos in their wild environment are truly amazing.
