The sound of glaciers. Perito Moreno

Perito Moreno

Forests, lakes, and rivers, clouds and winds, stars and flowers, stupendous glaciers and crystal snowflakes – every form of animate or inanimate existence, leaves its impress upon the soul of man.  Orison Swett Marden

Perito Moreno, Argentina

Not long ago I told you about my wonderful trip to Ushuaia. I hope you got convinced to put that place and Patagonia on your travel list. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Since Patagonia, both the Chilean and Argentinean parts is so beautiful, I am going to share with you another amazing place that you must visit while traveling around the south end of the continent. During the same trip, after exploring Chilean Patagonia we headed towards Argentinean border. When we saw the sign that borders the two countries we screamed with excitement that very soon we will see one of the most amazing places in South America- Perito Moreno.

We heard stories, but those of you that travel might know that sometimes, or maybe rather usually, words do not do the justice of such breathtaking places as this one. Well, not just words…the photos even!

Favourite travel resources:

  • Booking.com for searching best prices on accommodation.
  • Discover Cars is a great website as they search both local and international car hire services, so you can choose the best deal for yourself. Make sure though, that the company has a good reputation and reviews.
  • Get Your Guide is my place to go for searching and booking tours and excursions, especially when I travel solo.
  • World Nomads travel insurance. I like them because they have quite extensive coverage of different activities. Travel insurance is a must in South America. Don’t skip it.
  • Jack’s Flight Club is a service that can save you hundreds of dollars on flights, it works especially well in Europe.
  • Trivago where you can search and save on hotels.
  • Go City is a perfect site for booking bucket list experiences and attractions all in one to avoid paying for multiple tickets. Easy and saves money.
  • Trip Advisor amazing for good quality recommendations.

Spectacular growing glacier of Perito Moreno

Approaching Perito Moreno we could see the blue ice blocks entering the lake. The closer we were getting, the more spectacular the glacier was, one a few growing glaciers in the world.

Of course the pictures do not show the true beauty of the glaciers. To give you an idea how big it is, here you have a few numbers: Perito Moreno is 18 miles (29 km) long and three miles (5 km) wide, and at its tallest point, reaching over 73m out of the water. Just to get a perspective, it is as tall as 20 floor building.

The huge wall of ice seems surreal!

How to get to Perito Moreno

The closest city to Perito Moreno is Calafate. It is 50 m (80km) to get to the National  Park of Glaciers. The journey takes around 1,5 hours through a spectacular land. We drove on our own, but there is a number of one-days tours operating from Calafate to Perito Moreno and the prices vary starting at from AR$ 220.

At the kilometer 50 (approx) you will get to the entrance gate to the National Park where you’ll need to pay the entrance fee. The way is still long till you get to see the amazing view of the ice block.

The journey time was rather pleasant. With the beautiful weather, Lago Argentino in sight that is of a turquoise colour, wild horses idly munching on grass and ever gorgeous mountains in the background, we enjoyed it very much.

After over an hour of driving we approached the entrance to the park. We paid the entrance fee and continued the trip. Shortly after we noticed a blue wall in the distance. At this point our smiles grew even bigger and our impatience impossible to manage. Honestly, the picture cannot show the real beauty of the landscape.

Perito Moreno, Argentina  Can you see those tiny pieces of ice floating? They are not as small as they might look, some of them are of a size of a car.

Once in a while, usually every few years the glacier grows so much inward the lake that it totally blocks it. Then it breaks and starts growing again. Those who had a pleasure to witness this phenomenon say that it is something that literally makes you speechless. I did not see that apart from a few pieces of ices falling into the water with a sound of a bomb. The glacier has a calming effect when looking at it. It seems so static. Only from time to time it roars so loud as if a bunch of bears wandered there.

The blue electric colour of the ice and the growing sounds it makes is something difficult to describe and erase from memory.

We walked around for long and took like a million pictures. They don’t vary much, how many different photos one can take of a block of ice? We did not care much, we just wanted to capture this electric blue ice blocks.

  2. The photos blew me away.

I would definitely want to visit Perito Moreno, but I just hope the post-pandemic ticket price wouldn’t be sky high.

Love your blog, especially the design 🙂
