Favourite travel resources:

  • Booking.com for searching best prices on accommodation.

Yerevan city break: amazing things to do in the capital of Armenia

You won’t have to worry about a shortage of things to see and do in Yerevan. That is for sure. It is one of the most interesting capitals in the region. Although I haven’t been able to see

Take an excursion to Khor Virap

Just a short drive from Yerevan lies the iconic Khor Virap, offering a panoramic view of the majestic Mount Ararat. This ancient monastery, with roots dating back to the 4th century, is not only a historical treasure but also a place of spiritual significance. As you stand in awe of the stunning landscape, the silhouette of Mount Ararat provides a breathtaking backdrop, creating a moment that lingers in your memory. It is definitely a place to go and easy to plan, no matter your travel arrangements. There are many different private tours having Khor Virap on the itinerary.

Top tip: For the best photo options, stop at the road leading to the monastery to have this view. It is quite far and probably with a mobile you won’t be able to capture it well, but if you have a good zoom in your camera, surely you will get some amazing snaps. I took this picture with my Olympus Pen changeable lens.

Yerevan what to do

Visit Geghand Monastery outside of the city

Venture beyond the city limits to discover Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled within the picturesque Azat Valley. Carved into the rock, this medieval marvel reflects the ingenuity of Armenian craftsmanship. It is a truly beautiful monastery and even though is not as impressive on the outside compared to other monasteries, it is fascinating. Explore the intricately adorned chambers and feel the spiritual energy as you wander through this living testament to Armenia’s rich cultural heritage. If you have an opportunity, listen to the choir in the room on the second floor. That was probably the highlight of the whole trip.

Symphony of Stones

Does this look familiar to you? Yes, a similar natural structure can be seen in Iceland. Although the Armenian rocks are lesser known, they are not less impressive. Basalt columns, resembling a symphony frozen in time, create a unique geological wonder. The site’s ancient history and the ethereal beauty of the stones make it a captivating stop for those seeking a harmonious blend of nature and culture. To see this masterpiece, head to Garni Gorge on your way to Geghard Monastery. There is a limited parking space near the entrance and you will need to pay a fee of 200 drams to enter the site.

Day trips from Yerevan are a great idea to see as much as possible without a car in a short time. Check Get Your Guide and Viator for ideas.

Blue Mosque

Discover the rich history of Yerevan through a visit to the Blue Mosque- the last functioning mosque in Armenia. This graceful building, adorned with its unique azure tiles, tells tales of the city’s history and showcases the Persian architectural influence. Upon stepping inside, you’ll feel the serene atmosphere and be captivated by the exquisite details that embellish this enchanting treasure. The mosque is actually located inside a garden behind walls. The atmosphere there is so serene and welcoming.

What to do and see in Yerevan

The Cascade Complex

An artistic marvel in the heart of Yerevan, the Cascade Complex is a colossal stairway adorned with sculptures and fountains. As you ascend, the panoramic views of the city unfold, providing the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll. This cultural hub also hosts outdoor art installations, making it a dynamic and ever-changing space.

The Museum of Armenia

Delve into Armenia’s rich tapestry of history and culture at the Museum of Armenia. From ancient artifacts to contemporary art, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the nation’s heritage. Gain insights into the resilience and creativity that define Armenia’s identity as you explore the exhibits within this cultural haven.

Cafe 1936

The prettiest coffee place in Yerevan dates back to 1936 when this beautiful space served as a tobacco shop and a bookshop later. Now, without changing the original woodwork and ceiling, it is a cute little coffee place not far from the Opera of Yerevan.

What to do in Yerevan

Eat at a traditional restaurant with a folk music show

There are a few restaurants that offer dinner accompanied by a traditional music performance (for example, Yerevan Tavern). It’s a great way to listen to Armenian music, see folkloric outfits and have a lot of fun while enjoying typical dishes.

Yerevan what to do

Have lunch at Sherep and see traditional lavash being freshly made

This was one of our favourite restaurants in Yerevan. Funny, I almost sound like someone who frequents this city, but if you visit, you’ll quickly realize how easy it is to feel like Yerevan is your place. Sherep is a modern restaurant that serves Armenian food. It is always crowded with tourists and locals, so if you come for lunch or dinner, you better make a reservation beforehand. What is cool about this place is that you can watch how the women make fresh lavash.

Yerevan 2800th Anniversary Park

Not far from Republic Square, have a stroll along Yerevan 2800th Anniversary Park, which was donated by the richest family in Armenia. We liked this park so much that went there for an evening walk twice. It is not a typical park with lots of trees, but rather a long strip full of dancing fountains and some of the cutest sculptures resembling children.

How cute is this fountain of children with an umbrella and rain?

Republic Square

The heart of Yerevan beats vibrantly at Republic Square. Bordered by grand buildings and adorned with dancing fountains, this central square is a hub of activity. From cultural events to casual gatherings, Republic Square captures the essence of Yerevan’s social spirit and serves as a perfect starting point for exploring the city. In the morning, the square is quite empty and transforms into a totally different world in the evening, when the fountains work, the beautiful lights fall on the buildings and it bustles with locals enjoying their time. I think it is one of the prettiest city squares.

Yerevan city break

GUM Market

For an authentic taste of Yerevan’s daily life, meander through one of its bustling markets. GUM market is small but truly an interesting place to visit, where you can immerse yourself in the culture of Armenia by watching women make lavash or pickles. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to taste samples of local produce.

Cathedral

No visit to Yerevan is complete without exploring the iconic churches that dot its skyline. The Cathedral of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, also known as the Yerevan Cathedral, stands as a symbol of Armenian Christianity. Marvel at its architectural grandeur and step inside to experience the spiritual tranquility that envelops this sacred space.

In Yerevan, a city break becomes a cultural odyssey, where every corner reveals a piece of Armenia‘s rich heritage. From ancient monasteries to vibrant markets and modern artistic spaces, Yerevan invites you to immerse yourself in its unique blend of history, tradition, and contemporary charm.

Where to stay in Yerevan

The recommendation I was given and happily conforming here is that the best area to stay in Yerevan for first-time visitors is Kentron. It’s the central area close to all the city’s attractions and best restaurants.

I’ve researched many hotels in Yerevan and here are a few of my favourites:

  • Yerevan Place– located just at the entrance to Republic Square is a modern, luxury-like (although they don’t call themselves that), and affordable choice. The location makes it perfect.
  • The Alexander Luxury Collection Hotel– I’d say this hotel is an affordable luxury place to stay. Beautiful in an excellent location.
  • Armenia Mariott hotel– an ultimate luxury hotel in the heart of the city.

How to get to Yerevan

Getting to Yerevan city centre from the airport: Often, I pre-book a pick-up from the airport (or to the airport) using Booking.com as they are highly reliable using local drivers. It works as a private transfer that usually is cheaper than a car arranged by a hotel. It is a great option for flights arriving 9or departing) at night or early in the morning.

If you are hiring a car, you can pick it up directly at the airport.

Getting to Yerevan from neighbouring countries: For those traveling overland, there are multiple entry points into Armenia from neighboring Georgia or Iran. Due to Yerevan’s location and the quality of road infrastructure, entering from Georgia is often more convenient and there are actually many tours that come to Armenia from Georgia. If you are not thinking of visiting Armenia as a separate trip or have a limited time, joining one of these tours could be a great alternative.

Please note that Armenia’s borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed, and overland travel is restricted. If arriving from Azerbaijan, it is necessary to transit through Georgia. There is even a train option from Baku to Tbilisi.

How long to stay in Yerevan?

Yerevan is rich in history, culture, and vibrant city life. Allowing a few days will give you time to visit key landmarks, museums, and experience the local atmosphere. We stayed 3 nights in Yerevan and I felt that it was a bit too short. I think two or three full days in Yerevan would be enough to comfortably enjoy it, but if you plan to take some trips, add at least one extra day. Khor Virap and Geghard monasteries are a must during a trip to Armenia but deserve a full day as Armenia’s surrounding regions offer beautiful landscapes and historical sites that are worth exploring.

Is it safe to visit Yerevan?

This is a common question I receive from people when they hear that I visited a lesser-known destination. I get it, but you don’t need to worry about safety in Yerevan as it is generally considered a safe destination for tourists. However, like any other city, it’s essential to remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions- basically, use your common sense.
Armenians are known for their hospitality, and visitors often feel welcomed and safe. Not just Yerevan, but everywhere in Armenia we visited felt safe.
