5 underrated cities for a weekend break in Europe

When I still lived in Europe, juggling a job and chasing a university diploma, city breaks were the only way to survive. Since I spend a few good years in Scotland, trying to stay dry during the 300 days of autumn and winter, I used to chose hot destinations, like Spain or Italy. Pretty popular, I must say. Later I started discovering other amazing destinations and I’d like to propose a few that I really enjoyed. Europe is great in that sense, small distances, I mean. If you really struggle with time, but want to travel, weekend breaks in Europe are a perfect option.

Kraków

Strolling the cobbled streets of Kraków’s old town is like entering a postcard. It is imaginably the most visited Polish city. Perhaps it should not be on this list, it is surely not underrated. However, it could not stop myself from adding it anyway.

Hotel recommendations in Kraków:

  • Bonerowski Palace – staying in this hotel might transport you to the times when Kraków was the capital of Poland and kings and queens ruled it. Origins of the hotel can be traced back to the 13th century. The style of the place perfectly portrays it, but with a modern luxury and comfort.
  • Mercure Kraków Stare Miasto – for being a chain hotel, Mercure in Kraków is quite welcoming. And it is just a few minutes away from the main square, so you won’t have to waste any time or money on taxis (save it for pierogi).
  • Hotel Indigo – I love the style of this hotel, a mixture of modern and old classical. It surely adds extra charm to the character of the city.

Madrid

While everyone books flight to Barcelona, I choose Madrid. I’ve been there more times that I can count and every time surprises me more. It is a city with variety of cultural events, local cafes that allow you to be part of authentic daily routine and excellent shopping opportunities. If you are into arts, the the list of excellent museums is endless: Sorolla museum, Thyssen Bornesmiza museum and El Prado (of course) are just examples and I highly recommend you to check them out. Madrid is big and interesting enough for a full week, but a weekend break is a good start any times of the year.

Hotel recommendations in Madrid:

  • Santo Mauro Autograph Collection–   The decor of this hotel in a 19th century building is really beautiful and full of history. The three building belonging to the hotel are like taken out straight from a fairy tale. Plus, you get Mariott Bonvoy points.
  • Gran Melia Palacio del los Duques – This would another great choice for spending a perfect and comfortable weekend in Europe. Hotel in a beautiful 19th century building with classy decor and Madrid feel.
  • Villa Magna – clean modern with a periodical charm. This hotel is located in one of the trendiest streets in Madrid- Paseo de la Castellana, close to trendy restaurants and shops. And after whole day walking around, welcoming spa might be just what you need.

Brno

Brno is a small city in Czech Republic that is hugely underestimated. It’s little, that’s true, but small places have their charm.

Hotel recommendations in Brno:

  • Barcelo Brno Palace – the interior of this 19th century building is so romantic that you won’t stop taking pictures in it. The biggest city attractions are just a few steps away- perfect if you are visiting over a weekend.
  • Grandezza Hotel – I am sure you would not forget staying in this luxurious hotel with hand painted glass ceilings. The decor might be a bit too much for you if you like simplicity, but for sure it’s worth having a look.

Tbilisi

Tbilisi was some surprise! Before heading to the capital of this charming, green country, I spend two weeks driving around Georgia. So when at the end of the trip I finally made it to Tbilisi, I really enjoyed my stay. It’s a small city with a charming old town and some modern building scattered around.

Hotel recommendations in Tbilisi:

  • Rooms Hotel – I love boutique hotels and this one is no different. I stayed also in another Rooms Hotel in Kazbegi and I think you’ll love this hotel.
  • Sheraton Grand – No need to speak much about this hotel. Like most Sheratons it’s comfortable and gives a great night sleep.

Freiburg

I heard of Freiburg years ago while traveling around Spain. I met a couple of people talking about this German town in only superlatives. So when I headed to this part of Europe to discover what the Black Forest region has to  offer, Freiburg was my favourite spot for hot chocolate and a strudel.

Hotel recommendations in Freiburg:

  • Colombi Hotel – if you are up for a luxury, Colombi would be your choice. It’s elegant (in an old way, I’d add), offer beautiful views and has a Michelin star restaurant.
  • Schwarzer Adler Estate Hotel – a folksy
