Street art in Antofagasta- a city in the north of Chile
Some people say that there is not much to see in Antofagasta, the largest city and the capital of the Atacama region. While it does not receive many tourists, there are a few interesting things to see and do there.
Antofagasta is a typical industrial city. Everything that is happening there is related to mining. This city is usually excluded from the “must see in Chile” list and tourists tend not to make a hassle of visiting this city and if they do so, it’s probably an overnight resting stop or the famous ‘la Portada’, a natural monument.
This city, however, has a colorful side to it. Beautiful mosaics decorate the walls along the promenade, a football stadium or school buildings caught my eye. There is graffiti in many places throughout the city, some are interesting, and some might be creepy.
Curiousities about Antofagasta
- Antofagasta used to belong to Bolivian territory and was conquered by Chile during the War of the Pacific (1879-83).
- The British left in Antofagasta the Torre Reloj (clock tower), which is a replica of London’s Big Ben. You can see on its trunk the tiled flag of Great Britain and Chile.
Favourite travel resources:
- Booking.com for searching best prices on accommodation.
- Discover Cars is a great website as they search both local and international car hire services, so you can choose the best deal for yourself. Make sure though, that the company has a good reputation and reviews.
- Get Your Guide is my place to go for searching and booking tours and excursions, especially when I travel solo.
- World Nomads travel insurance. I like them because they have quite extensive coverage of different activities.
- Jack’s Flight Club is a service that can save you hundreds of dollars on flights, it works especially well in Europe.
- Trivago where you can search and save on hotels.
- Go City is a perfect site for booking bucket list experiences and attractions all in one to avoid paying for multiple tickets. Easy and saves money.
- Skyscanner is a perfect website for searching flight routes and comparing prices.
Many wall decorations tell the history of the city and the region.
You can see that many paintings, graffiti or mosaics are related to the main industry of the region: mining.
If you happen to be in this industrial city, it might be interesting to notice the amount and diversity of street art. Even though there are not many attractions in the city, I think that the street art here is quite intriguing.
