Easy ways to save money for traveling

Tips to save money for epic travels

Traveling has always been a big part of my life and I knew that I have to find ways to fulfil my dream. Finances are often the biggest problem of many, but with some careful planning, you can save a lot of money and pack your bags for an epic journey, city break on beach holidays.

I came across many people asking how it is possible to travel so often or that they are never able to afford it, but if you really want to travel or just simply go on wonderful holidays, you can make your dreams come true. Waiting and hoping that one day you will afford it won’t help much. I have for you a few successful ideas on how to feed your piggy bank before going on holidays.

Favourite travel resources:

  • Booking.com for searching best prices on accommodation.
  • Discover Cars is a great website as they search both local and international car hire services, so you can choose the best deal for yourself. Make sure though, that the company has a good reputation and reviews.
  • Get Your Guide is my place to go for searching and booking tours and excursions, especially when I travel solo.
  • World Nomads travel insurance. I like them because they have quite extensive coverage of different activities.
  • Jack’s Flight Club is a service that can save you hundreds of dollars on flights, it works especially well in Europe.
  • Trivago where you can search and save on hotels.
  • Go City is a perfect site for booking bucket list experiences and attractions all in one to avoid paying for multiple tickets. Easy and saves money.
  • Trip Advisor– amazing for good quality recommendations.
  • Skyscanner is a perfect website for searching flight routes and comparing prices.

How to save money for holidays

Here you have a few ideas on how to save money for traveling:

1. Forget Starbucks and Costa– If you really need your daily shot of caffeine, equip yourself in a flask and make your own beverage at home. If you buy a coffee every day for $3-$5, you can save up as much as $150 a month.

2. Walk and cycle – Whenever you can walk to work/school/university or use your bicycle instead of a car or public transport. You will save a tons of money and get healthier and fitter. You won’t believe how quickly all the coins will add up.

3. Stop buying magazines– This little pleasure, especially for many girls, can add up to quite a big amount. If you just can’t resign from buying magazines, many of them can now be found online- cost free.

4. Get rid of unwanted clothes– Go through your wardrobe and sell all your unwanted clothes, shoes, handbags, books etc. To help you decide what items should go, simply follow the rule: something that has been unworn for a year must go. eBay is a good place to start selling your things.

5. Stop takeaways and dining out– Sure, you can’t just stop socialising, but not invite friends for a homemade dinner or drinks instead of paying a fortune in bars and restaurants? An average take away cost around $10, that will make £40 a month. This could pay for a one night accommodation in your holiday destination. If you enjoy your takeaways more often, do the math.

6. Reduce bills costs– Watch your energy usage, switch off the lights in the rooms you are not sitting for example. Use water and electric devices smarter. By making little changes in your habits, the bills will arrive smaller and you’ll have more money to enjoy on your holidays.

7. Renegotiate your phone/cable/internet plan– See if you really need to have an expensive plan or maybe you can renegotiate with your provider. The companies often will try to keep you with them as their customer, so ask. Alternatively you check out the competitors and their rates.

8. Give up your gym card– Although exercise should be a part of your life to stay healthy, instead of paying for a membership card, do sports for free. Running, cycling etc. can save you a lot of money and train your heart the same way. Check in your neighbourhood if they don’t organize free fitness/zumba classes or similar. This appears to be more popular now and I have noticed free classes in many places I visited.Malaysia

9. Bring your own lunch to work/school etc. – This simple change can save you from $100-$200 a month if you start making your own lunches instead of eating out. And it will most probably be healthier.

10. Don’t spend money you don’t have– Having a credit card can cost a lot of money. Banks usually charge a lot for lending you money, so try to limit the usage of your credit cards and pay your debits as quickly as you can.

11. Make saving little-by-little your habit– Little spendings are often not noticed, but all will add up quickly enough. Make a habit of putting some money into saving every week or every month. Make it an essential cost and pretend that the money you put aside don’t exist. Any small amount will make a difference, whatever you can.

12. Book accommodation smarter– There’s many websites that help you find hotels and other types of accommodation during your stay. I found it most useful to book it through Hostelworld and Booking.com. The advantage is that you are not going to be charged for the booking.

13. Sign up with with Jack’s Flight Club– it’s free to sign up, but can make you save a lot of money on flights. You will receive weekly emails with incredible offers; it works especially well in Europe.

Don’t forget travel insurance. You never knows what can happen and potentially it can really costly. Better save than sorry.

  1. I love this, Anna! You make a lot of really good points here. We were just talking about our upcoming trip this November to Costa Rica. My daughter was complaining because she doesn’t know Spanish and they speak Spanish there. We told her how LUCKY she is to be traveling like this at her age! It’s an amazing experience and something that my husband and I treasure very much. I hope she gets that someday.

These are some great ideas for anyone to follow, regardless of whatever dream you are trying to pursue!

  2. Ohhh! Thanks for this. I can’t wait to see how you share tips on saving on vacation. No problems with us for going on vacation. I make it a point every year to go on at least one vacation. This year we are going on two! But I am always looking for ways to save without having to sacrifice quality. 😛

  3. You have shared some very valuable tips on saving! I think many of us don’t realize how much we spend on a daily basis because it’s just a couple dollars here and there. I’ve always recommending taking a day and making a note of all those ‘little’ expenses. Most folks are very surprised to see how much they have spent at the end of the day!

  4. Genialne !!! Na pewno zastosuję wszystkie porady już od dziś 🙂 Chyba muszę kupić skarbonkę….
    Dzięki Ania :*

  5. Great suggestions Anna. And when you’re saving for something you’re really looking forward to and enjoy it’s so much easier to commit to making choices that support your goal. It can become kind of a fun game.
