A walk to Paraguay from Iguazu

How to get to Paraguay from Iguazu

Paraguay  is not a very popular place for tourist exploration and there are no many guidebooks about it. I haven’t heard a single story from other travellers about this mysterious country. I haven’t seen much there either, mainly because of lack of time.

On foot

We just happened to be Foz do Iguazu in Brazil and decided to pay Paraguay’s town Ciudad del Este a little visit. Buses are going in this direction but with the gossip we heard telling us about the big traffic, we decided to walk.

It was a bit hot, but crossing the river gives you a nice fresh breeze and beautiful views. What we saw on the other side of the river was a bit surprising. I didn’t expect such a big change after just crossing a river. Brazil and Paraguay are like two totally different worlds. Ciudad del Este is not the most attractive to visit, but Paraguay has much more to offer. You can find there unspoiled natural landscapes, national parks, rivers, a huge variety of beautiful birds and UNESCO sites.

By bus

There also bus transfers from Iguazu to Ciudad del Este. Several bus companies operate services between Iguazu and Ciudad del Este. Look for options that fit your schedule and budget. Companies like Crucero del Norte, Rio Uruguay, and others might offer routes to Ciudad del Este. I use this website to search and book my bus tickets around the world.

What to do in Ciudad del Este

Ciudad del Este is massively popular for cheap shopping. I haven’t had a chance to see what’s beyond and apparently, it’s worth visiting. When you get there the crowd, the pavements filled with stalls full of ‘designer’ clothes and the chaotic traffic may be a bit overwhelming for a first-timer.

When you happen to be there, there are two main attractions to be seen outside of the town: the Itaipú Dam and the Salto de Monday waterfall.

  1. Lovely photos. I’ve never been to Paraguay but I remember when I was a young child in school every student was assigned a country to study throughout the year. Paraguay was the one I was given. I had a difficult time finding much information even then.
