Meet Mafalda

“I  like persons that say what they think. But above all, I like persons, who do what they say.”

Mafalda turned 50 last year. This comic strip written was first published on the 29 September, 1964 in the magazine Primera Plana, soon after it was born in the imagination of the cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado (better known by his artistic nickname Quino). Mafalda is still being loved very much not only in Argentina.  The comic books have been translated into 10 languages and exported to 27 countries. This little girl owes the fame to the timelessness of what she says, clear ideas, the sharp criticism and simple thoughts.

It is a right attitude to smile at bad times. But until when we have to keep faking this ordered happiness?”

” – Don’t run with new shoes on as you’ll ruin them! Don’t jump on the sofa as you’ll destroy it! Don’t drag yourself on the floor as you will tear your clothes!

 – Tell me, what is the purpose of being a child, if they don’t let you exercise!”

Y, claro, el drama de ser presidente es que si uno se pone a resolver los problemas de Estado no le queda tiempo para gobernar.

MafaldaYou can meet Mafalda everywhere in Buenos Aires, you can even buy Mafalda decorated mate. In the underground between the stations of Peru and Catedral, you can see a mural dedicated to Mafalda and her friends.
MafaldaMafalda does not like racism, inequality and wars. Apart from her aspirations to work for United Nations, she would like to learn languages and contribute to world’s peace. Like other children she likes playing in a park with friends and her favourite game is playing cowboys. She likes pancakes and dislikes soup. She has a pet, a little turtle, which she names Beaurocracy, because it moves slowly.

Mafalda is a fan of Beatles’ music and democracy.

MafaldaAt the corner of the streets Chile and Defensa in the San Telmo neighbourhood, Mafalda sits on a bench with her comic friends. Just a few steps away, Quino had a house, where he created the character of this little curious and idealistic girl. At the entrance to the old house of the cartoonist you can see a sign “Here used to live Mafalda”.
