Freiburg: Jewel of the Black Forest

Visiting Freiburg- a charming city in Germany

It would be wrong not to write a little guide to Freiburg, also nicknames the jewel of the Black Forest.

I miss Europe, I must admit. Although it is exciting to travel around South America, get to know some breathtakingly picturesque places, try new cuisines and form so many beautiful memories, for me it is not just traveling. I live here now . I have to face everyday reality, I learn new cultures and how to live within them. It is not being-on- the- road kind of travelling, it is more like.

Freiburg

So as I already whispered, I miss Europe. It is so small in comparison to South America, a lot is smaller than some countries alone! It is so diverse, so dynamic and beautiful. Therefore, I would like to jump back for a moment and share with you some beautiful place that you can find in Europe. I would even bravely say, that those places should land on your travel list. I will be presenting you one place at a time. Today: Freiburg- the jewel of the Black Forrest.

Freiburg is a sunny and cheerful university town in southern Germany. This buzzing town has a lot to offer, from a pleasant stroll in the cobbled streets of the old town to visit a beautiful cathedral and museums.

Old Town (Altstadt) Münsterplatz

Freiburg’s Old Town offers a delightful experience, perfect for exploration and strolls. While compiling your list of top things to do in Freiburg, don’t miss the chance to wander around this beautiful area.

Dating back to pre-1120, the Old Town, though reconstructed post-World War II, exudes an intriguing blend of ancient and contemporary architectural styles, creating an enchanting ambiance without feeling excessively museum-like. Its fusion of old-world charm with modern vibrancy seamlessly intertwines.

The best way to immerse yourself in its essence is on foot. Unlike many German Old Towns bustling with vehicular traffic, Freiburg’s pedestrian-friendly streets offer a relaxed and safe environment for exploration.

Numerous attractions, such as Freiburger Münster (Cathedral) and Museum Für Stadtgeschichte (City History Museum), are nestled within this area. Bordered by the Dreisam River and Schlossberg Mountain, the Old Town boasts a scenic locale, complemented by its proximity to the main train station.

Freiburger Münster (Cathedral)

Münsterplatz, Freiburg im Breisgau Situated prominently at Münsterplatz, the 13th-century Freiburger Münster (Cathedral) stands as a testament to architectural grandeur within the Old Town. Its awe-inspiring presence, coupled with remarkable history, commands attention.

This Romanesque structure, constructed over 300 years, endured the ravages of World War II. Upon completion in 1330, it claimed the title of having the world’s tallest tower.

Both its interior and exterior exhibit exquisite craftsmanship, showcasing stunning stained glass windows funded by Medieval guilds and an impressive Renaissance altarpiece crafted by Hans Baldung Grien.

Externally adorned with intricate carvings, the cathedral boasts a tower offering panoramic views, on a clear day you can even see France. While entry to the church is free, a fee allows access to the 70-meter-high tower.

Museum Für Stadtgeschichte (City History Museum)

The City History Museum serves as a portal to Freiburg’s rich heritage, housed within a structure crafted by sculptor Christian Wentzinger in 1761.

Upon entry, the museum captivates with a splendid staircase and ceiling frescoes. Exhibits encompass city models from the 1600s and 1700s, offering glimpses into Freiburg’s evolution pre and post-World War II.

Interactive activities on Level 1 engage visitors of all ages, providing insights into the city’s historical evolution. Although predominantly in German, the museum’s diverse collection offers a worthwhile experience despite language barriers (it’s closed on Mondays).

Freiburg

Bächle

Freiburg’s Old Town charms with its iconic water channels known as Bächle, constructed in 1170 from the Dreisam River. Initially designed for industrial and cleaning purposes, these channels also served to prevent fires, albeit later used as open sewers.

Spanning approximately 15.5 kilometers, these channels contribute to the town’s medieval ambiance and assist in cooling the surroundings. Caution is advised not to step into them, as local legend suggests it might lead to an unexpected outcome—a marriage to a Freiburger!

Nowadays, it seems to be a playground for children and adults. But be careful, as the locals say, when you step into them when full of water, you will probably come back.

Freiburg

Augustinermuseum

Freiburg’s Augustinermuseum provides a haven for art enthusiasts, showcasing works spanning the Middle Ages to the 19th century within a former Augustinian monastery. This well-renovated site hosts a captivating Sculpture Hall featuring masterpieces by renowned artists, making it an ideal stop on rainy days.

Please note that the museum requires an entrance fee and is closed on Mondays.

Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square), Markthalle (Market Hall), Martinstor (City Gate), Schwabentor (City Gate), Museum Für Neue Kunst (Museum of Contemporary Art), Colombischlössle/Archäologisches Museum (Archaeological Museum), Schlossberg (Castle Hill), Alter Friedhof (Old Cemetery), Seepark (Lake Park), Black Forest, and Europa Park offer further intriguing experiences and diversions near Freiburg. These attractions cater to various interests, making a day in Freiburg an enriching and multifaceted experience.

Freiburg is located in the Black Forest area and there are so many amazing things to see around. It’s worth exploring little tours and excursions.

Market

One of my favourite places in the whole of Freiburg is the market, where you can find the freshest fruit and vegetables from the local farmers, stands with freshly cooked bratwurst and handmade items. I love markets with such diversity of fresh fruits and vegetables. They are for me like candy shops for children.

How to get to Freiburg

The nearest airport to Freiburg is in Basel in Switzerland. I use Skyscanner website for the best routes and price comparison. It only takes an hour by car to get to Freiburg from Basel airport or two hours from Stuttgart airport. If you have some time, I’d recommend renting a car as there are so many beautiful places to see around, including the famous Neuschwanstein castle.
