Feel the romance of Eilean Donan Castle. A quick guide.

Scotland is a beautiful country with breathtaking landscapes, but the real romantic charm is created by the countless number of castles. If you ever planned a trip to Scotland, you are most likely to come across images of an iconic romantic castle in the Scottish Highlands, which also happens to be one of my favourites.

A quick guide to Eilean Donan Castle

It is located on a small island peninsula, surrounded by astonishing scenery and three sea lochs (lakes): Loch Duih, Loch Long and Loch Alsh. Being there makes you believe in fairy tales again. When you visit Scotland, you can see its history through castles.

Eilean Donan Castle and a little bit of its history

It is very surprising to most people (including me) that the current state of the castle is only around 100 years old. It looks much older. The castle was first inhabited in the 6th century, but the fortifications were made in the 13th. Since then the castle went through 4 modifications throughout the centuries of Scottish history and wars. Originally this castle was build for the request of Alexander II as a defense against the Vikings. Later the same century, Mackenzies of Kintail owned the castle.

In 1719 the castle was destroyed in a Jacobite uprising and for nearly two centuries was left in ruins until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae- Gilstrap had bought the island together with  the castle in the 1911. He worked hard for the next 2o years in order to restore the castle and the bridge as we can see it today.

For the curious ones: Many movies were filmed in Eilean Donan Castle, including: “Made of Honour” (2007), “Elisabeth: The Golden Age” (2007), “The private life of Sherlock Holmes” (1970), “Highlander” (1985), “The World is not Enough” (1999)- James Bond movie.

    1. Debbie, no Ghosties there, but if you like them you should definitely visit Edinburgh- Ghosties hiding behind every corner 😉

      1. Bruce,Thank you very much for your comments I apricepate them very much. We’re sure hopping to be able to bring back some worthy images from the Red Rock area near Sedona, the Grand Canyon and our visit to Antelope Canyon Arizona, that we can use to create some Digital Art.

  1. What a beautiful castle! Though I’m not a travel fan, I think you’ve awakened some romantic longing in me for a castle-rich life… minus the drafts and damp, of course. 🙂 Beautiful photos!

  2. This place has such character with the castle looking older, the water and greens nearby and then the blue sky with fluffy clouds. I really like the bride and walls. Awesome!
