7 short excursions from Buenos Aires

1. Colonia de Sacramento

50 minutes of uneventful boat run crossing Rió de la Plata from Buenos Aires and you escape the craziness of the big city. Colonia is a little Uruguayan town built in the 17th century by the Portuguese. It is one of those places where there is no much to see and do…and that’s where its beauty is.

2. Estancia Puesto Viejo

Puesto Viejo can be reached within less than an hour from Buenos Aires and it is a great place for polo lovers. There are organized tours during which you can learn how to play polo and end the day with a dinner Argentinean style.

3. La Plata

La Plata is a capital of Buenos Aires province. It’s only on hour away from Buenos Aires and can interest you with interesting architecture and lovely green parks. All similar to Buenos Aires on a smaller scale. In La Plata there is the biggest in Argentina neo-Gothic cathedral designed by Le Corbusier. What makes it extra interesting is the fact that this is the only completed building in Latin America designed by this architect.

4. Montevideo

Hop on a boat and visit the capital of Uruguay. Not as cosmopolitan and busy as Buenos Aires, can be a nice place to visit. It is popular one-day trip from Buenos Aires and it is definitely worth a visit. If you have more than one day to spare, chill out at one of many beautiful beaches nearby.

5. Lujan

Only an hour and half away from Buenos Aires, Lujan is mainly known as a famous pilgrimage destination and for its neo-Gothic basilica. Those who are not interested in religious sites can enjoy great grill restaurants (not surprise here, it’s Argentina!) or have a walk around the charming town.

6. Tigre Delta

If you want to rest, refresh your head and charge the batteries before more traveling or walking around the city, Tigre Delta is a perfect place. You are surrounded by nature and far away from the city noise. It’s not boring though. If you get tired of relaxing, find a boat tour or hire a kayak. And if that’s not for you neither, you can visit a few museums, too.

7. San Antonio de Areco

For a rural and typical gaucho experience go to San Antonio de Areco. It is located 113 km away from Buenos Aires and can be a perfect weekend escape for those who want to feel the Argentinean countryside spirit. Some say that you might even find your inner cowboy spirit.
